We are deeply saddened by news from Aswad Composite Mills in Gazipur, Bangladesh that a tragic fire has claimed the lives of at least 10 people.
ETI extends our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of the victims. We expect all efforts to be made to ensure that appropriate compensation is paid to those who have been affected by this terrible event.
Several of our member brands have been linked to Aswad Composite Mills or the Palmal Group of Industries. We are investigating these reports in order to understand any direct or indirect relationships our members may have and to support the next steps.
This tragedy further illustrates the chronic health and safety issues that plague Bangladesh’s garment sector, which for too long have endangered workers’ safety and ultimately, their lives.
The Rana Plaza collapse in late April spurred the international community into action, with unprecedented numbers of international brands, retailers, unions and NGOs now committed to working together to raise factory safety standards in Bangladesh. We support the vital work of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, and call on all brands and retailers to engage with this credible framework for driving change for garment workers.
No brand or retailer sourcing from Bangladesh can be complacent about factory safety. The time to act is now.
