This Friday 24 April, we must stop and remember. This date marks the two year anniversary of a horrific tragedy – the collapse of Bangladesh’s Rana Plaza that took the lives of more than 1,100 workers and injured thousands more.

Learning health and safety lessons and crucially, strengthening workers' voices are key elements to a safe garment sector.

Addressing security concerns should not be allowed to put workers' rights in jeopardy.

Working conditions can vary but inadequate health and safety standards and verbal abuse, bullying, threats and humiliation are too often commonplace. 

What has been learnt and is still being learnt by the garment sector as a whole? What is the bigger picture?

It's important to recognise the role that greater openness and accountability can play in ensuring a disaster such as Rana Plaza never happens again.

We recognise that more needs to be done, while acknowledging the 'monumental' progress that has been made in five years..
