We welcome the news that the ILO-backed Rana Plaza Trust Fund will be the central vehicle for paying compensation to Rana Plaza victims and their families. We believe that compensation that is well-coordinated and aligned to international labour rights principles is in the interests of those affected by this industrial disaster.
We commend Primark and the other retailers that are meeting their commitments and making payments into the compensation fund. But we urgently call on all brands and retailers that sourced from Rana Plaza to also step up and do the right thing. The Rana Plaza collapse was the worst industrial accident in 30 years, and it is deplorable that the victims and their families have had to wait nearly a year for the compensation they are due. It is also unacceptable that many workers and their families will only receive an initial payment by the one year anniversary.
