Peter McAllister, Executive Director of the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) is to take up the role of Director of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), ETI announced today.
The Ethical Trading Initiative is a ground-breaking alliance of companies, trade unions and voluntary organisations, working in partnership to improve the working lives of people across the globe who make or grow consumer goods - everything from tea to T-shirts, from flowers to footballs.
Peter McAllister comes to ETI after seven years at the Geneva-based cocoa body, which brings together global companies, trade unions and NGOs to eliminate the worst forms of child labour and forced labour from the international cocoa industry.
McAllister's strategic vision and stakeholder management abilities will help strengthen ETI even further as it continues to grow and embarks on a new strategy to drive change for millions of workers in global supply chains.
Says ETI Chair Alan Roberts: "Peter was an outstanding candidate for the recruitment panel. As well as his exceptional leadership skills and in-depth knowledge of labour rights in supply chains, he has shown that he can deliver results for workers on the ground. We look forward very much to working with him."
At ICI, McAllister earned an impressive reputation among all stakeholders in the sector for his clarity of leadership and the impact that ICI has had on the sourcing practices of major global brands.
Previously, he spent 13 years working in strategic leadership roles for the international development NGO CARE, including spending prolonged spells in India and West and Southern Africa.
Peter will assume his position at ETI on 11 October.
ETI Deputy Director Martin Cooke has been appointed Acting Director of ETI in the interim.
Dan Rees left ETI on 14 July to take up the prestigious position of Director of the ILO-IFC Better Work Programme from mid-August.
Says Alan Roberts: "Dan has made an incredible impact in the field of workers' rights since he joined ETI 11 years ago. He has steered our growth from a fledgling band of pioneer organisations to an internationally recognised organisation that no retailer can ignore.
"We wish him huge success in his new role."
