International press has reported that Bangladeshi labour rights activist Aminul Islam was tortured and murdered last week in Dhaka.
We are shocked and saddened by the news, and support calls upon the Bangladeshi government to conduct a full and transparent investigation into Aminul's death, to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Aminul Islam and his colleagues at the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity have previously been the subjects of intimidation and harassment, but this latest turn of events will sadden all of those who are working to improve the working lives of Bangladeshi workers.
We commend Aminul and other labour rights activists for their courageous work. They are the voice of the under-represented, raising awareness of the often inhumane working conditions of factory workers across the globe.
